I was misquoted on BSE

SIR — Your article “Madcow monitoring costly — official” published on June 6 contains some errors.

SIR — Your article “Madcow monitoring costly — official” published on June 6 contains some errors.

The article quotes me as having said that imports from high suspect countries like Australia and Newzealand were rejected. This is not true. Australia and Newzealand are free of BSE and actually we import Bovine Semen from there! The impression, if not corrected, could easily bring about diplomatic discomfort.

This is what I said: “The head of Animal Resources in the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries Dr. William Olaho-Mukani, yesterday said that monitoring for the BSE status in the country is expensive, the ban was still on and imports are only allowed into the country from countries which are free of the disease, like Australia, Newzealand and South Africa.

Imports from countries where BSE has been reported are rejected”.

Dr. W. Olaho-Mukani
Director Animal Resources
