THE Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is insisting that it is the rightful owner of the Lira ground, which the district authorities had  earlier demarcated for a new Akii Bua stadium.

The stadium, earlier constructed on the ground gazetted for the expansion of Lira Hospital by the national planning authority in the 1950s, had been allocated the ground that currently hosts the Lira airstrip.

The land belongs to the municipal council, although CAA owns a freehold title secured in 2003.

Lira officer in charge of lands George Adoko confirmed the gazetting of the land but said he would investigate how CAA got a certificate of a freehold land title in 2003.

“We are not convinced with the procedure they used to acquire the freehold land title from the central lands office,” Adoko said.

The district’s plan to transfer the stadium to the airfield was delayed as neither CAA nor the works ministry are committed to constructing a new airfield at Anai, about 5km southwest of Lira town.

CAA public relations officer Ignie Igundura said, “This is a matter we shall sort out with the district authorities. We cannot construct another airstrip in Lira. We already have one.”
