Works, housing and communications minister Eng John Nasasira has ordered Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) to insure the remaining three ships.
URC’s managing director Daudi Murungi was ordered to repair, certify and insure the ships.
“The minister has directed me to repair the ships and certify them for insurance,” Murungi said recently while appearing before Parliament’s committee probing the sinking of MV Kabalega.
Murungi said earlier insurance for the ships was withdrawn by Forbes Insurance Company because the ships were not certified and didnot meet international shipping standards.
“The insurance was withdrawn because the ships were not registered with Lloyds. However, we had paid the last installment of the insurance money,” he said.
Murungi said URC had sued the insurers to refund the money and they had refunded $40,000 (sh69.6m).
“This is not adequate. We sent the case to our debt collector,” he said.
