LOOKING at Click, a two-year-old female pregnant dog breastfeeding a three-month old cat, one wonders why human beings fight, hate and even kill each other.

The owner of the dog, Mzee Boniface Ndenga, 62, a retired teacher of Kamwenge town in western Uganda, also has a male dog called Puff.
The two dogs spend hours cuddling the cat.

These animals show that cats and dogs can live together as friends.
Ndenga says he was greatly amazed by the animals’ behaviour.

“Whenever I look at these animals, I think of one thing — we must be disciplined and accommodative. If different animals can accommodate each other, why can’t human beings do the same? Don’t you think we can learn a good lesson from these animals?” Ndenga asked.
Ndenga said he had the two dogs before he bought the kitten.

He added that at first, the animals could not get on well with each other, but after sometime, they were shocked to find Click and Puff cuddling the cat.
Click who is heavily pregnant seems to enjoy being suckled by the cat and when she moves away, the cat becomes miserable and licks its mouth implying that Click’s milk is tasty.
Dr Berna Nakanwagi, a veterinary doctor with the Uganda Society for Protection of Animals, said dogs and cats can live together peacefully because they can tolerate each other although they fight at times.

Nakanwagi, however, said it was amazing for a dog to accept being suckled by a cat.

She said whereas cow milk has a high fat content and could affect a cat if taken undiluted, dog’s and cat’s milk have the same fat content, so dog’s milk can’t be dangerous to a cat.

However, Dr Susan Bingi, a veterinary doctor said cats and dogs are not very friendly, adding, “This is a very unique experience, but one thing we must remember is that all animals belong to one kingdom — the animal world.”

In his article Can cats and dogs live together as friends?, Larry Chamberlain gives guidelines on how cats and dogs can stay together.
  • Introduce the animals to each other and if you have more than one dog, the introduction must be a dog per time. Show them that the other specie must not be harassed.

  • Make each specie of the animal understand that the other specie is not a replacement, but an additional to the family. Supervise them until they accept each other.

  • Some dogs might not be great friends with cats, but they can live together in a state of tolerance, rather than friendship and it works. Some breeds of dogs like hounds and hunting dogs cannot get on with cats. Not all breeds of cats are sociable and will never live with other animals.

  • For cats and dogs to live together as friends, it calls for patience and perseverance on the owner’s part and the animals, and the result will be worth it!
