AS MPs were yesterday preparing to vote on the third term Bill, a mysterious list of politicians purportedly to be fronted by the NRM as candidates during the 2006 parliamentary elections surfaced in the House.

Prime Minister Prof. Apolo Nsibambi denounced the list, saying it was fake.

He instructed the Minister for Lands, Water and Environment, Major General Kahinda Otafiire, to make a clarification in the House that the list was not authentic and had not originated from the Movement.

The list contained names of politicians who purportedly will stand on the NRM ticket during the elections. A number of ministers and MPs were ostensibly missing from the list.

“This list is bogus and false. MPs and the entire country should ignore it. There are some members who want to cause confusion in the Movement,” Nsibambi said.
Laying the list in the House, Otafiire said, “I would like to call on MPs here to ignore the list.

The Movement has not appointed anybody yet to stand on the Movement ticket.

“Candidates will be chosen in a delegates conference, the Movement will not anoint anybody. Every body will have to fight it in the primaries.”

Asked about the source of the list, Nsibambi said, “This list is anonymous. But you can guess who is distributing it.

There are dirty and cheap tricks by some politicians.”

The list purported that Presidential secretary on Political affairs Moses Byaruhanga would be the NRM candidate in Kampala Central, which is currently represented by housing state minister Capt. Francis Babu.

However, Byaruhanga said, “My friend Babu is aware that I am not going to stand against him.”

In Iganga, the list said George Patrick Bageya, who is presently Busia RDC, would stand in former Vice-President Wandera Kazibwe’s Kigulu South constituency and Christopher Mudoola would be the candidate in Francis Mukama’s constituency.
