A’ LEVEL students have began deserting Arts classes so as to increase their chances of getting government sponsorship at university.
The Government recently announced that its sponsorship of students at public universities will be science-biased.
Mengo minister of education Dr J. C. Muyingo said the announcement created despondency among Arts students.
He said the turbulence, uncertainty and panic created by the announcement had forced many to cross over and give a shot at Sciences.
“To them the government pronouncement has rendered their subjects irrelevant and undesirable,” Muyingo said.
Muyingo, who is the headteacher of Uganda Martyrs SS namugongo, was on Sunday speaking at celebrations to mark the school day.
Bishop Emeritus Roberts Gay of Kabale Diocese was chief guest and commissioned a sh519m two-storey dormitory for O’ level girls.
Muyingo warned that the rush by students to join the Science classes against their choice and mental ability might have a negative impact on national performance.
