SIR — The burning of Kasese Central Market on
July 2 has caused great financial loss to traders and left them in tears.
The fire has been linked to a sudden surge of electricity after loadshedding. This raises concern whether the people whose property was burnt will be compensated.
The Lugogo thermal installation in Kampala has been paraded as a solution to loadshedding but that has not been demonstrated yet. Kasese can prevent any further loss and embarrassment related to loadshedding. There is an alternative source of power at Kilembe Mines power plant and therefore a hazard like this is puzzling. Can’t Umeme link up with Kilembe to prevent this kind of loss? Secondly was the burnt market insured or was it like the Kabalega ferry? Finally, I think it is time Kasese was provided with a fire brigade unit.
