BETWEEN January and June, 292 girls were defiled in mid-western Uganda, the regional Police commander, Zacheus Olyel, said while releasing the mid-year crime statistics.
The offences committed in the region included murder, rape, defilement, robbery, assault and use of narcotic drugs.
Olyel (below) said Kasese had the highest number of defilement cases of 84 with 14 girls defiled in each month.
“There could have been more cases that were not reported. We suspect the actual number was higher,” Olyel said.
The mid-western region covers Kabarole, kamwenge, Bundibugyo, Kyenjojo and Kasese districts.
Olyel blamed the increasing defilement cases on cultural beliefs that allowed girls to marry at an early age.
The Kabarole district Police commander, Musana Munene, warned parents and local leaders against handling capital offences like defilement.
According to the statistics, the consumption of narcotic drugs like marijuana is high in Kabarole district with 28 cases reported every month.
