For a year, he has been a ‘doctor’ treating patients for various ailments. Nobody suspected he was a quack medic because he did his work with the air of an accomplished doctor.

Little did his patients know their doctor scored a nine in Biology and Mathematics at O’ level, the highest level of the only science subjects the self-styled doctor ever studied. The health of residents, who have been receiving medication at his clinic in Kawempe, Kampala could be at risk.

“We intend to inform all the people who got treatment, especially injections at his clinic to go for a medical check-up,” says Frank Lubega, the area LC chairman.

At A-level (UACE), the quack doctor studied History, Economics and CRE for which he scored E, O and E respectively. Moses Naulika Bona, 27, was until recently, a renowned doctor in Nsoba zone, Kyebando, where he had lived for a year. Until he is alleged to have strangled his girlfriend, gullible residents flocked to his ‘clinic’ for treatment.

But Peruth Karungi, the deputy Police CID, Kawempe Police Station, said records at the Ministry of Health indicate that Bona is not a registered doctor. Bona, who is now at large, escaped from Nsambya hospital, where he had been admitted. The circumstances under which he escaped are not clear. He escaped with one piece of handcuffs, while the other remained on the hospital bed.

Oyulu, the Police officer, who was in charge, is detained at Kawempe police station as the search for Bona continues. “If anything happens, I will never forgive myself. I used to go to Mulago Hospital, but when a friend introduced me to Bona’s clinic, I took advantage of its proximity,” says a worried mother of two residing near the clinic.

“When the area local council directed all drug shops and clinics owners to register, Bona did not oblige. He instead mobilised his colleagues to defy the directive,” Andrew Esutu, a retired medic in the military, and the LCI vice-chairman, said.

A letter Bona wrote before his disappearence further exposed he was a quack. Esutu said it was
written in broken English. He wrote that ‘Milly was going out with many men’. He cited a man from Kabalagala and another from Wandegeya. Bona wrote the letter before he took an overdose of drugs after he strangled his girlfriend, Milly.

A visit to the area revealed a small house, which doubles as Bona’s residence and business premise, was closed. His abode was a ‘multi-purpose’ room partitioned into two. Rusty shringes, one with a purple fluid and another with black liquid, are placed on a window pane.

In Bona’s room is a small wooden bed covered with a blue and flowery bed sheets. His clothes hang on the wall and three green jerrycans compete for space with a basin at the right hand corner. A small radio with its volume knob at maximum stands on a stool near the bed. The front partition has stacks of medicine shelves.

But the only medical equipment found were the syringes, razor blades and white gloves scattered on the floor. In his photo album, now with the Police CID, Bona’s life can be easily traced.

The Police have Bona’s original O’ level and A’ level results slips and his senior two end of term report of Manjasi High School. After his senior six, Bona went into business of selling musical tapes.

He came to Kampala in early 2004 to operate a clinic. On the morning of July 10, a son to Bona’s landlady saw him through the window lying unconscious.

Fortunately, Hebert Kiwanuka, Bona’s neighbour, had a spare key to Bona’s house. In the previous night, Bona had told Kiwanuka that he was going for burial in Tororo the following morning. When Kiwanuka opened the door, they found Bona lying unconscious beside the strangled body of his girlfriend.

On the evening of the fateful day, Bona and girlfriend stayed indoors until the following day. During the wee hours of the night, Bona reportedly waited for the girlfriend to sleep and while she slept, he tied a rope around her neck and strangled her.

Mildred Mirembe Buyondo alias Milly, was a second year education student of Makerere University. She joined the uni
versity in 2003/2004 academic

year on private sponsorship.
Her father is Yolenimu Buyondo, 53, a peasant from Kyamutakasa in Luwero.

A chit headed ‘death for all’
allegedly written by Bona was found in his room. It read:
‘You have been lying to me that you don’t love other men, but I recently proved the contrary, we have failed to live up to our expectations, now let all of us face death.

Milly! You know how we have been struggling, but you kept a deaf ear and failed to appreciate. Let me finish you now. Your other men will find you in heaven.

Yours late Muko’.
Bona joined Mbale Progressive Academy in 1995 in senior one. According to his class master’s report, Bona was a promising student.

Satisfactory...he is a promising student both in academics and behaviour,” his teacher wrote on his report.

His position in form two of third term was 28 out of 133. He later joined Manjasi High School, Tororo for O’ level and A’ level in 1998 and 2000 respectively. His neighbours described him as a reserved young man, who rarely received visitors. They only saw the slain girlfriend visit him on weekends.

Bona was born in Nabowa village, Palisa district. One Anette, a nurse in Kawempe, said she hails from the same village as Bona, but she has disassociated herself
from him.
