SECURITY authorities in the eastern province of Congo have resolved to denounce and apprehend any rebel forces that may be planning to destabilise Uganda.

In a communiqué on July 15, the Kisangani-based Congolese vice-governor for the eastern province, Medard Autsai Asenga, said they would intensify vigilance on Ugandan rebels.

They said their operation would extend to robbers, thieves and other criminals who may find refuge across the border.

The statement follows a recent bilateral meeting between a Ugandan security delegation from Arua district and counterparts from the Congolese eastern territory of Aru.

Asenga, who is in charge of economy, finance and development in the province, initiated and chaired the meeting that revolved around security and business.

Arua resident district commissioner Omony Ogaba and the commissioner of the Congolese border territory (district) of Aru, Drakana Osoga Faustine, signed the communiqué.

The resolution will boost efforts to crack down suspected Ugandan dissidents, the Peoples Redemption Army (PRA), which reportedly plans to launch an armed rebellion against the Movement.

About 25 alleged PRA rebels are facing treason charges at the Kampala High Court.
