<b>Soldiers vote</b><br>OVER 200,000 UPDF soldiers and their families yesterday voted in the referendum. A survey around the UPDF’s Mbuya barracks, Bugolobi and Kiswa showed that some soldiers’ names, photographs and other identities were missing from the register.

Voters scarce
THE presiding officer of Bwema Islands in Mukono district yesterday said said by 9:00am, over 10 polling stations had not received any voters.
Moses Wabwire said names of some voters were missing from the register.

Time-wasting
KAMPALA mayor John Ssebaana Kizito yesterday refused to participate in the referendum, saying it was a waste of time and resources, reports Godfrey Kimono.
He said the time spent in voting could be used for some developmental work like constructing roads and distributing drugs in hospitals.

Rain mars
VOTING in Kasese, Kabarole and Bundibugyo districts kicked off poorly due to heavy rains that broke out at dawn lasting until 12:00am.

Gae to return

TENANTS on city tycoon Hassan Basajjabalaba’s buildings in Kampala have resumed business but said if management does not reduce rental fees, they will quit the premises at the end of this month.
After closing about 200 shops on Luwum and Market streets over non-payment of rent, Basajjabalaba (below) told the tenants to quit his premises if they were not willing to pay the new rates.

Japan donates
THE Japanese government has offered US$13.6m (over sh230b) to assist millions of people affected by conflict and natural disasters in Africa.
Uganda will get US$2m (sh3.5b) to support over 1.4 million displaced persons.

Youth angry
National Youth Conference (NYC) delegates at a conference in Kampala on Saturday threatened to censure Youth MPs for failure to attend the NYC held at the Pope Paul Memorial centre.
NYC chairman Joseph Okwakau informed the assembly that it was only Northern Youth MP Dan Kidega who had sent an apology, stating that he would be preparing for President Museveni’s visit to northern Uganda.

Naiga’s intent
DISABILITY state minister Florence Naiga has expressed interest in contesting for the Kayunga district seat.
She said this on on July 27 at a three-day integrated farming workshop for youth from Lira, Arua, Kasese and Mubende districts in Masaka.

FDC chief mobiliser Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu stole the show in Kabale on Monday when he briefly addressed a rally convened by Rubanda West MP Henry Banyenzaki at Muko.
