THE newly-constructed BIDCO edible oil complex in Jinja district has started production.

The complex, part of BIDCO’s US$130m investment in Uganda, also covers palm oil plantation project on Kalangala island in Kalangala district.

“It is only a year since we commissioned our operations in Uganda and we are already employing over 2,500 people in Jinja and Kalangala. This was one of our many promises to the people of Uganda and we have honoured it,” the managing director BIDCO Group, Vimal Shah, told journalists at the factory on Thursday.

The manufacturing unit comprises an edible oil refinery, a laundry soap plant and a plastic container-making plant.

The company has started selling some of its brands like Cowboy and Kimbo cooking fats, Goldenfry and Ufuta cooking oils, Whitestar and Kuku laundry soap and Blue Band in Jinja and other areas.

Vimal said the firm was faced with many challenges but it would penetrate the market.
