Referendum poll was useless, DP explains

Democratic Party (DP) president general Paul Ssemogerere and treasurer Ssebaana Kizito on Saturday said Ugandans boycotted the referendum poll because it was uncalled for.
Ssebaana, who is also the Kampala mayor, said they boycotted the referendum on July 28 because the government held it for selfish gains.
He asked the public to turn up in huge numbers and support the party in 2006 to enable them oust president Yoweri Museveni.
“We encourage you to turn up and vote for DP in 2006 so that even when the votes are rigged, DP still wins,” he said.
Ssemogerere (below) said freeing political parties was a gradual process through DP’s efforts when it took the government to court.
He asked the public to turn up for rallies, adding, “you should stop fearing that the police will come and beat you. We are free to hold rallies.”
The DP diehards, clad in party colours of green and white, were speaking at a rally at Kireka rehabilitation centre in Wakiso district.
The newly-elected Busiro South MP, Joseph Balikuddembe, was among hundreds who turned up for the rally that had earlier been scheduled to take place at the Constitutional Square in Kampala.
Ssebaana said Museveni went to the bush in 1980 to fight dictatorship, “but it appears he has started exercising what he fought against.”
