Kapchorwa district is to extradite three suspected robbers to Kenya to stand trial.
The district CID officer, Christopher Kwerit, said the suspects were believed to have been part of the gang that exchanged fire with Kenya Wildlife Authority rangers in Mt. Elgon National Park on July 28.
“We are waiting for the Kenyan government to formalise the extradition process before we transfer them to Kitale,” he said.
He said the bodies of three other men killed during the shootout were in Kitale hospital mortuary, while that of the fourth suspect identified as Arap Matui was recovered from the park.
Kwerit said he did not know the identities of the bodies at Kitale.
“Those are not our people. We therefore do not know where they came from,” he said.
The police officer in charge of TransNzoia region in Kenya, Augustine Kimantiria, could not be reached for details.
On August 2, Kwerit allowed 38 civilians to collect Matui’s body from the park. He said in a letter to the Uganda Wildlife authority that the deceased was one of the notorious thugs in the district.
Kwerit said in the letter that Benet sub-county would be peaceful after the death of Mutui.
