Recognised cultural leaders are to receive sh5m monthly for facilitation from the Government.

“Every month the government shall be giving out sh5m to support recognised cultural/traditional leaders in line with Article 246 of the Constitution. This is not a salary but the government’s humble contribution towards the upkeep of these leaders,” gender minister Zoe Bakoko Bakoru said.

Bakoko, who was speaking at the first disbursement at the ministry headquarters on Thursday, said nine leaders would receive the money.

She said the payment was in fulfilment of President Yoweri Museveni’s pledge to support cultural/traditional leaders.

However, Buganda, Busoga and Buruli were conspicuously absent. Gender permanent secretary Ralph Ochan said Charles Mwogezi, the Baruli/Banyara leader, was among the nine leaders entitled to the facilitation.
