A new software product, SurfControl, that filters electronic mail (e-mail) and websites to control “unproductive” surfing of the Internet has been introduced by a South African company, Networks Unlimited, an official has said.

“Research in 2003 by IDC.Com, a US-based company, showed that 40% of Internet surfing and electronic mails received by company employees are not business related,” the company’s business development executive, Glen Ross, said on Wednesday at Sheraton Kampala Hotel.

He said another study carried out in South Africa found that a company with 1,000 employees where each employee spends 30 minutes surfing makes the firm lose $25,000 daily.

“Money and time is lost in web distractions, surfing sports and games, pornography, shopping, personal finance and other non-worker sites,” Ross said.

“Meanwhile 90% of the companies’ capital is in digital format. That is a target for computer hackers and viruses, while the e-mail is an open door for viruses to enter and destroy confidential documents,” he said.
