HILLARY Wamono’s late free-throws gave debutantes Lugazi Mixed SSS a big edge in their shock 50-48 win over favourites St Joseph’s College, Layibi in the Sprite Invitational basketball tournament at St Henry’s, Kitovu in Masaka.

The see-saw battle saw Wamono pick up a late foul from Layibi’s defence with five seconds left and the scoreline reading 48-48. He then went to the charity line where he buried both shots to give Lugazi their fourth victory and improve them to second place in the tournament.

Wamono had 12 points with Silas Tirop adding eight for Lugazi who are one win away from occupying pole position in the eight-team tournament and have also already booked a berth in tomorrow’s semi-finals.

Eagles Nest secondary school showed that they had learned from previous mistakes when they picked two vital victories to send them top of the boys’ standings.

Rallying behind Jeff Mwanika, Eagles Nest handed Layibi College their second 40-30 tournament defeat before erasing hosts St Henry’s Kitovu 73-40.

Former Sprite Schools champions, Kabojja SSS revitalised their championship mettle with victories over Lubiri (51-22) and Budo (41-39).
