FORMER national champion Bob Bibasa leads a 40-man group set for the chess Olympiad qualifiers starting this weekend.

The group, comprising the top rated players, will battle over eight rounds in the first phase of the qualifiers at Lugogo club.

Phase one is the first of three lined up by Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) to get a six-man team for the 2006 Olympiad.

The world’s premier chess competition will be held in Turin, Italy from May 20 to June 4.
National coach Joe Kaamu, said six players who competed at last year’s Olympiad are excluded from the first phase.

“They are the top rated players, so they will join the race in the second phase,” Kaamu said.

The stars are Stephen Kawuma, Geoffrey Kanduho, Moses Kawuma, Grace Nsubuga, Shaddrack Kantinti and Isaac Munanira.

They will face 18 players from the first phase in the second phase to be played over nine rounds next month.
