GOVERNMENT will not change its stand on the 12% excise duty on mobile phone airtime, the finance state minister, Mwesigwa Rukatana, said on Monday.

Rukutana was defending the Government before the finance committee. He said mobile phone operators make a lot of profits.

Rukutana said equipment in the operators roll-out programme, is not taxed. He said given the operators high turnovers, the 2% increment would not affect their investment plans.

The New Vision recently published a list of top taxespayers, where the three giant telecom operators of MTN, Celtel and uganda telecom, contributed up to 123b in taxes last financial year.

“We stand by our figures. From the information we have, these companies have got high turnovers,” Rukutana said.
