HEAVY rains and landslides have destroyed property and crops worth millions of shillings in Ndaija and Itojo sub-counties in Mbarara and Ntungamo districts.
Secretary for Ndaija and Buhanama ecosystem committee, Wilkins Kyawe, said the downpour also created a traffic jam on the Mbarara-Kabale road in Ntungamo.
He said other areas affected by the rains included Kyesika I in Mbarara district, Nyakayojo and Buhanama in Itojo, Ntungamo.
He told journalists on Monday that the landslides killed goats and destroyed gardens of bananas, potatoes and beans. He said the floods washed away stones from the hills in Kyesika II village and heaped them in the valleys.
“The landslides left gullies of about two kilometres and most of the dregs were deposited into River Rwizi, thus causing sedimentation,” he said.
Kyawe said the affected residents were in a panic.
The National Environment Management Authority focal officer for the western region, Jeconious Musingwire, said the landslides were mainly caused by bush burning.
“There are no checks (trees) to break the speed of flow,” he said.
