THE Forum for democratic Change (FDC) has dispatched a team of zonal coordinators to organise and conduct elections from village to district level ahead of the party’s first ever delegates’ conference due on October 28.

The FDC coordinator for women, Ingrid Turinawe, yesterday said the party would ensure a more equitable participation of women in its governance.

“The party platform section 11 provides for equal opportunities and leadership for women. FDC spells out clearly its commitment to promote women’s rights. In all organs and committees of the party, women shall hold 40 percent of the seats,” she said.

Turinawe was addressing FDC’s weekly press briefing at their najjanakumbi offices in Kampala.

She said FDC would now rise up as it starts its journey towards effective women integration into the party leadership
The FDC acting chairperson, Salaamu musumba, said at least 1,000 delegates shall attend the delegates’ conference.

“Apart from the members, we shall also invite people who will add value to our party. We are talking about elders and the party shall duly meet to decide whom to invite,” she said.

She did not, however, state whether exiled FDC chief Col. Kiiza Besigye would attend or not.

Musumba, who has just returned from a three-week tour of Canada, UK and the US, said FDC had solicited support from both Ugandans in the diaspora as well as the international community towards Uganda’s transition.

“The donor community had promised to offer technical and logistical support to parties to allow for the growth of a viable multiparty dispensation,” Musumba said, adding, “Ugandans in the diaspora are committed to making appropriate contribution to the democratisation process in Uganda and are mobilising themselves and the Western governments to play their part during this critical process of transition.”
