PETER Magona, the Uganda Rugby Cranes captain, stands yet another big test in his career — to lead Uganda to victory against favourites South Africa in a crucial match today.

Uganda lock horns with the South Africa development side dubbed ‘amateurs’ in the Confederation of Africa Rugby (CAR) Top 9 championship at Ellis Park.

The hosts, who beat Zimbabwe 48-27 last month, enter the pitch with a psychological advantage against the Rugby Cranes that lost the first tie of the championship 13-5 to Zimbabwe in Kampala in August.

Magona has a good composition of players in Anthony Kinene, Moses Soita, Tony Lugya, Simon Wakabi and scrum half Gamal Faisal among others.

The experience of brothers Fred and Timothy Mudola alongside vice skipper John Musoke and sensational Emmanuel Ochaya could see the team make history and hopefully qualify for the second round.

Country manager Herbert Wafula has, meanwhile, confirmed that the team will train under a highly qualified South African coach in Johannesburg before they return home.

Following Uganda’s good performance in the World Cup qualifiers, Uganda Rugby Union (URU) plans to hire foreign coaches to drill the players ahead of the second stage of the qualifiers that start next year.

On the local scene, the finals of the Super 3 championships are on with Victoria A taking on Elgon A at Kampala Rugby Club ground at Lugogo.
