THE Police in Kampala are on high alert to avert insecurity as hundreds flock to Lugogo for the international trade fair opening today and the 43rd Independence celebrations at Kololo.

Kampala Extra O/C CID George Kanonko yesterday said drinking of alcohol should not go beyond 11:00pm and arms are outlawed for non-security personnel. (See related story on Page 6).

“We are concerned about your security and property. As good people flock to the show, our brothers will also be flocking the place to engage in crime. Take care of your mobile phones and watches.

“Anyone who drinks beyond the stipulated time will be going against the regulations. The show will be closing at midnight but people should stop drinking shortly before that,” Kanonko said.

The 13th international trade fair, which has attracted exhibiters from various parts of East Africa, closes on October 10. Kanonko said students and pupils would not be allowed into the fair between October 4 and 6, adding that they would tour between 7 and 10.

He said there would be all kinds of security forces deployed at the grounds, some in plain clothes.

Kampala Extra traffic chief Gabriel Tibayungwa said ordinary people would pack at the kampala City Council grounds and use the next entrance, while VIPs would use the upper entrance.

“If your vehicle is parked in the wrong place, it will be towed away at your cost and risk,” he said.

On Independence Day, Tibayungwa said Upper Kololo Terrace would be closed to the public from 6:00am to the end of the function.
