FOR about one-and-a-half hours yesterday the moon covered the sun in a lunar eclipse.

Effects of the annular eclipse lasted up to about 3:00pm from about 1:30pm when it was first noticed.

For an annular eclipse to occur, the moon moves between the sun and the earth.

In yesterday’s eclipse, the moon appeared as a shaded disk masking the sun like a black plate, leaving a bright fiery rim around it.

V. R. Baryomu, the assistant commissioner for meteorology, said the eclipse experienced in Uganda was not as intense as the effect predicted in Kenya.

He, however, said the National Meteorological Centre at Entebbe lacked equipment to monitor such occurrences. He said the centre relied on visual observations and information from the Internet. He said a drop in the temperatures was normal whenever an eclipse occurred.

Countries which saw the eclipse included Tunisia, Libya, Chad and Sudan.
