THE death of Dr. Milton Obote drew sombre reactions from leaders of opposition political parties.

THE death of Dr. Milton Obote drew sombre reactions from leaders of opposition political parties, writes Jude Etyang.

Political leaders from the main opposition coalition G6 yesterday acknowledged Obote’s contribution to founding Uganda as nation but fell short of praising his two terms in office.

Democratic Party president Dr. Paul Ssemogerere, who lost the 1980 presidential elections to the deceased, said Obote will be remembered for his contribution to Uganda’s independence struggles.

Conservative Party’s Ken Lukyamuzi praised Obote’s contribution, adding that he was “a great leader who made great mistakes.”

Forum for Democratic Change interim chairman Salaamu Musumba said Obote’s experience will be greatly missed during this period when the country is transiting to multi-party politics.

Dr. Jean Barya of The Free Movement said Obote’s and Idi Amin’s deaths should be a basis for reconciliation of the political differences in the country.
