SIR — Following the suspension of the TV tax, one would imagine that UTV is doing something to show the public that they deserve the money. To the the contrary, they are not. It was with curiosity that I watched the UTV news at 10.00pm on Wednesday, to find out how they are faring. On the day that getting to Entebbe was impossible because of the return of FDC leader Kizza Besigye, UTV had other ideas about what makes news.

This was their order of the news: President Yoweri Museveni giving his ‘tired’ lectures about slave trade and colonialism to a UK audience, Prime Minister Apolo Nsimbabi praising some old priest who turned 90 and debate about some obscure bill in parliament! Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Nshimye Ssebuturo was receiving some muzungu. minister of state for Industry, Jennifer was Namuyangu at a function of some company.

Only after these boring items did they mention that Besigye was back and they were quick to remind listeners that other presidential candidates Aggrey Awori and Chapa Karuhanga did not go to exile! At this point, I realised how little I had missed UTV in the several months I did not bother to press the Channel 1 button on my remote. I will not be pressing it for a long time to come.

Even the Global Fund probe commission had not been aired at this point, yet I had watched it on WBS and very interesting witnesses had appeared.

Thanks to WBS, they had ably captured the moments. Until UTV learns that news is not about the ruling party, we will oppose the TV tax (should it be re-introduced) even if it means being sent to Luzira. It is simply ridiculous!
Does UTV have professionals or do they get their instructions from State House?
