THE UN held its 60th anniversary celebrations in Gulu district to draw the attention of the world to the LRA conflict, the acting resident and humanitarian coordinator has said, writes Chris Ochowun.

Martin Mogwanja said, “We decided to celebrate this UN day in Gulu so as to draw the attention of the world to this conflict and bring it before the international arena to bring pressure of all the parties to get sustained peace.”

Mogwanja, who is also the UNICEF country director, said, “We reiterate our commitment to promoting the three UN principles of peace, development and human rights in the districts that have been hit hardest by the LRA rebellion in northern Uganda.”

The celebrations took place at Kaunda Ground on Friday. This year’s theme was ‘peace and prosperity’.

“Celebrating this event here is significant because we highlight the urgency for peace, development and protection of human rights of people in conflict-affected areas of the country,” Mogwanja said.
