KASESE district chairman Yokasi Bihande announced yesterday that he had abandoned the NRM to stand as an independent candidate for the district LC5 seat in next year’s election, reports John Thawite.

At a press briefing at his office at Rukoki, the district headquarters, Bihande accused the Kasese NRM district branch of divisionism and lack of internal democracy.

He said the party hand-picked people to the recent village, sub-county and district NRM committees.

The district speaker, Charles Baluku, defeated Bihande in the district NRM elections on October 29 to take the district NRM chair.

“In the majority of villages and sub-counties in this country, there were no elections at all. Most people who wanted to participate were not given chance to participate democratically,” Bihande said.

He also accused National Political Commissar Crispus Kiyonga of patronising the NRM branch.

“Those who support the NPC and oppose the Obusinga cultural institution have chances of being elected by the NRM supporters,” he said.

Bihande, who is serving his second term as LC5 chief, said he had decided to toe an independent political line after “a lot of soul-searching and consultations” with his supporters.

He accused the district NRM branch of dividing supporters by branding others as “cream” and others as “dilute.”

Bihande, whose wife, Winnie Kitsa, is a member of the FDC district committee, said she was free to associate with any political organisation of her choice.
