UGANDA has bowed out of the World Boxing Championship because of lack of funds.

NCS general secretary Jasper Aligawesa confirmed yesterday that government had failed to release the required sh40m for a team of nine boxers for the competition in China.

National coach Dick Katende could not hide his disappointment.

“The situation has moved from bad to worse. We urgently needed that exposure,” said Katende.

The team that had fighters training in their respective clubs comprised of Phillip Adyak (l/fly), Martin Mubiru (fly), Atanus Mugerwa(bantam), Sharif Bogere (feather), Hamis (l/welter), Michael Obin (welter), Amza Wandera(middle), Twaibu Mayanja (l/heavy), Asuman Katende (heavy) and Nicholas Buule (s/heavy).

Uganda’s failure to make it to China comes shortly after the country’s inability to also make it to the Commonwealth Championship in Liverpool.

The two competitions were supposed to be build-ups for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in March.

The World Championship is the biggest boxing event after the Olympics. Uganda featured in the inaugural edition in Havana, Cuba in 1974 where light welterweight Ayub Kalule won a gold medal.

Kalule was not the only African but also the only boxer from the Commonwealth to attain the feat.

Another Ugandan Joseph Nsubuga won bronze in the light middleweight.
