THE US chapter of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has called for calm among Ugandans in the diaspora in the wake of Col. Kizza Besigye’s arrest.

NRM USA chairman Godfrey Sseruwagi said the arrest was a legal matter and not politically motivated and condemned the violent and destructive reaction sparked off by the arrest in Kampala.

Besigye, the president of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), was arrested on Monday and charged with treason, concealment of treason and rape.

“We ask that the opposition desist from exciting the public by exaggerating the reasons as to the circumstances of the arrest,” Sseruwagi said in a statement yesterday.

He said, “FDC in the diaspora is organising peaceful demonstrations and we ask that their leaders and supporters in Uganda reciprocate the peaceful endeavours and desist from any violence and or hooliganism.”
