WORK in Mengo Kisenyi, a city suburb, was rudely interrupted yesterday as the Police battled a potentially dangerous gas that was leaking and chocking residents.

Witnesses said there was an explosion from one of the five cylinders suspected to contain chlorine gas on Mwanga II Road.

Nabagereka Primary School, located within the vicinity, was closed after pupils started vomiting when the gas began leaking. It turned the green grass almost white.

Police Fire Brigade chief Joseph Mugisha said, “The cylinders were used to store chlorine, which is used for water treatment. It seems the cylinders were stolen with chlorine in them.’’

He said the Police and officials from the chemical unit department would investigate the origin of the cylinders.

The owner of the cylinders, Godfrey Kasirivu, was not available for comment. The gas halted business in the area.
