THE Police have deployed heavily at petrol stations in the city following threats by demonstrators to torch them.

Armed policemen and special Police constables have since Friday been guarding petrol stations in addition to the usual security guards.

Police said they had tightened security throughout the city and were guarding against any eventualities.

“We cannot take chances,” an officer said, adding that they had received information that some people were planning to set filling stations ablaze.

Kampala regional Police chief Benson Oyo Nyeko warned the public against violence, saying they risked court action.

During a riot last week after the arrest of Forum for Democratic Change president Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye (right), demonstrators burnt several cars and structures in the city.

City deputy Police chief Gabriel Tibayungwa told journalists last week that anyone caught in acts of arson would be jailed.
