SECURITY has been tightened at Luzira Maximum Prison with mambas (armoured vehicles) now patrolling the vicinity at night.
Sources said the mambas were deployed for surveillance purposes following the imprisonment of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president, Dr. Kizza Besigye.
Besigye has since November 15 been detain-ed at Luzira Upper Prison after he was charged with treason and rape.
He was recently granted interim bail by Principal Judge James Ogoola as the High Court waits for an interpretation from the Constitutional Court regarding the right to bail.
Efforts by Besigye’s lawyers to secure his freedom on Tuesday were thwarted.
The Commissioner of Prisons, Dr. Johnson Byabashaija (left), yesterday said he was not aware of the deployment of the mambas but did not rule out the possibility of other government security organs deploying around the prison.
He admitted that the Prisons department had stepped up its security.
He said he was aware of a contingent of military Police personnel that has always been deployed outside Prison main gate.
Capt. Dennis Musitwa attached to the UPDF public relations office said he was not aware of the deployment of mambas.
