WORLD women’s 3000m steeplechase champion Dorcus Inzikuru was yesterday discharged from International Hospital, Kampala (IHK)where she was admitted after collapsing at the New Vision headquarters on First Street, industrial area on Tuesday.
The star athlete was discharged in the afternoon after New Vision cleared her bills at the IHK.
National Council of Sports (NCS) and Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) had also expressed willingness to take care of the medical bill, but New Vision insisted it was part of their corporate social responsibility policy.
A doctor at the hospital said that the athlete was out of danger following the incident related to frustration.
“It is a minor case and I’m sure she will be fine soon. Such cases happen when one is frustrated so much,” the doctor said.
Inzikuru emerged from the hospital, where she had been kept since Tuesday morning, wearing her usual wide smile.
“I can now go back and catch up with my training programme in Kenya. I’m very happy with New Vision for whatever they have always done for me,” Inzikuru said.
New Vision Human Resource Administrator Kathy Sempebwa said that the company had to pay the athlete’s medical bill as part of the company’s social responsibility.
“Inzikuru is just one of the many cases we have always handled as our social responsibility. We started the help when she collapsed at our offices and we had to complete it and that is what we did,” Sempebwa said.
Inzikuru was rushed to IAA clinic by senior internal auditor Francis Opoi shortly after she collapsed at the company’s reception desk.
The incident happened shortly before Inzikuru delivered a letter expressing her disappointment over the failure by the government to fulfill promises made to her after she won a gold medal at the world championships in Helsink, Finland in August.
