THE Arua Golf Open that tees of today will be a straight battle between Stephen Kasaija and Stephen ‘Tiger Woods’ Birungi.
Kasaija and Birungi will take centre stage after regular campaigners Deo Akope, Charles Yokwe and Dennis Anguyo opted to compete in the Nyali Open in Mombasa this weekend.
The dfcu Bank-sponsored Kasaija, who flew to Arua yesterday and later had an afternoon training session, said he would miss his rivals’ competition.
“Birungi is quite competitive but I normally play well when all the boys are around. When there’s only Birungi I may relax and then blame the course,” Kasaija said.
Birungi who returned to golf in August after three years in the wilderness, had an edge over Kasaija in recent international competitions in Uganda and Rwanda.
The 36-hole stroke-play tournament, sponsored by dfcu Bank, is expected to attract over 100 golfers from Kampala, Jinja, Mbarara, Masindi, Arua, Lira and Entebbe. Tee-off is at 7.30am.
