UGANDA’s 4th place finish in the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup has been rewarded with a remarkable rise in the FIFA ranking.

Uganda is now placed 101th from 109th in the November standings out of 205 nations. Brazil stay top.

CECAFA champions Ethiopia are placed 112th in the world. Their performance in Kigali had them rising by 16 places.

Rwanda and Kenya, who are both at 89, are the region’s most highly ranked countries followed by Sudan at 92. Tanzania is at 165.

Cameroon (23) and Nigeria (24) are Africa’s best ranked countries.

Ghana (50), who will be one of Africa’s five representatives in next year’s World Cup, won the race for the Best Mover title, shaking off competition from Ethiopia and Togo.

* FUFA vice-president technical Asuman Lubowa yesterday disclosed that national coach Mohammad Abbas would be examined before being given the green light to prepare for the 2008 Nations Cup qualifiers.

“Before anything, we want to look at his qualifications, records, and contract and how he came to Uganda before deciding on whether he should start planning for the qualifiers,” said Lubowa.

The FUFA technical department intends to set up a committee that will plan for the African Cup of Nations and 2008 Olympics qualifiers due September next year.
