A scuffle erupted last week in the airforce barracks in Entebbe when the army destroyed acres of crops.
Army officers who spoke to the New Vision said their colleagues picked guns in a bid to protect their gardens from the soldiers sent to destroy the crops.
The crops included bananas, cassava and maize plantations. The gardens were on the compounds and undeveloped neighbourhoods that touch Entebbe airport-Entebbe town roads.
Acting army spokesman Maj. Felix Kulaigye said the destruction of crops and removal of livestock was ordered by the Director of Airforce, Maj. Gen. Fred Oyisigire.
“The crops were a security threat to the barracks,” Kulaigye said, echoing the words of the airforce director.
He said Oyisigire recently met the wives of soldiers who are the owners of the crops.
“They were given a two-month deadline to destroy those crops, but they refused to comply,” he said.
