THE executive secretary of the National Drug Authority (NDA), Apollo Muhirwa, has said NDA would establish a condom-testing facility in the country soon.
Muhirwa said the facility would ensure imported condoms conform to international standards.
He was on Friday speaking at a New Year party for NDA staff at the Nile Hotel Gardens in Kampala.
Muhirwa said the authority planned to construct an incinerator to dispose of expired and sub-standard pharmaceutical products.
“One of the roles of NDA is to carry out analysis and assessment of pharmaceutical products imported into the country or manufactured locally. This is to ensure that the drugs on market are of good quality,” he said.
Previously, NDA used to re-export drugs that do not conform to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).
NDA chief Dr. James Makumbi said state security agencies interfered with the body’s work.
He said such interference, which ignored the management and the ministry was bad.
Health minister Brig Jim Muhwezi, who was the chief guest, said the staff should have nothing to fear as long as they did their work properly. He said he would follow it up.
