PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has directed Kampala City Council (KCC) to re-open Arya Primary School today.
The school, located in Kololo, is sponsored by the Government under the Universal Primary Education (UPE) programme.
The state minister for primary education, Namirembe Bitamazire, said on Saturday the President issued the directive during a meeting with KCC officials and Kampala resident district commissioners (RDC).
Bitamazire said the President also directed KCC to return the books and desks it removed from the school so that the over 1,500 UPE pupils resume school today.
“We met with the President. We explained to him everything concerning the school.
“KCC did not give genuine reasons why they closed the school,” Bitamazire said.
She said the meeting was attended by Kampala mayor John Ssebaana Kizito, KCC education officials, Kampala RDC Stanley Kinyatta, deputy RDCS Hashaka Mpimbaza (Nakawa) and Frank Bamwine (Rubaga).
KCC had earlier advised parents to relocate their children to other UPE schools.
On April 15, 2003, Justice Gideon Tinyinondi directed KCC to hand over the school to the registered owners, Trustees of Arya Pradimidhi Sabha East Africa.
The court said all pupils already registered at the school under the UPE programme be retained by the school until they completed their primary course or left the school voluntarily.
