UGANDA’S first Coca-Cola Popstars talent search audition that took place on February 18, in Mbarara was top of the range entertainment.

And with all due respect, the judges, (Anthony Morgan, Christine Mawadri and Zwai Bala), should have paid for the laughs they had!
Sitting in the audition hall at Lake View Regency Hotel, was like watching a comedy featuring hilarious stand-up comedians.

The judges were looking for style, confidence and a melodious voice.

Each contestant had 15 seconds to impress them with an acappella of a song that could best convey their vocal quality. By 6pm, 366 people had auditioned. They came from all walks of life – high school and University students, casual labourers, pregnant women, mothers with toddlers suckling their breasts and herdsmen who seemed to have abandoned their animals.

And the dress code – slippers, snickers, old shoes, buggy jeans and gomes. They sang all types of songs – from folk songs to church hymns, to local dance hall hits, R&B, rap and hip hop.

During presentation, they couldn’t sing for their lives! The audible and confident were just melodramatic loud-mouths who picked on songs and ‘crashed’ them beyond comprehension, leaving the judges in shock.

Mic ya Ziggy D became the audition’s anthem. One out of five participants sang it!

“There wasn’t great talent. Many didn’t qualify not just because of the voice but they were not performers,” Zwai Bala said.
