SIR— I read with concern the article in The New Vision of 27 February 27, “Doctors threaten strike”.
I find their recommendation that a doctor’s salary be raised to sh1,500,000 and that of a registered nurse to sh500,000 very selfish because of the following reasons:
Firstly, there are various health professional cadres who play an equally important role as that of doctors in health service delivery but are taken as not important by doctors. For example, the last time the doctors demanded for a salary rise, they were granted a 100% increase, whereas other cadres in the same field were granted only a 5% rise. This imbalance must be avoided by the Ministry of Public Service. Secondly, the doctors do not work in isolation. For every patient seen by the doctor, the medical assistant has seen 40 others. The enrolled nurses do the heaviest workload of meeting the needs of the patients.
