THE Electoral Commission (EC) will sensitise the army and other security organs on their responsibility to ensure they do not interfere in the elections.

This was said by the EC deputy chairperson, Sr Margaret Magoba, while meeting Kampala mayor John Ssebaana Kizito and his executive at the City Hall in Kampala on Friday.

“We have planned to sensitise the army who have been named for interfering with elections on their roles and tasks,” she said.

She added, “Many army and security officers have taken it for granted that they have a great role in electing candidates. But we want to sensitise them on where their rights begin and end, so that they do not interfere with the elections. This time we want to have free and fair election results,” she said.

The EC chairperson, Eng. Dr. Badru Kiggundu, said the visit was aimed at seeking KCC’s proposals on how the EC can work in a mutually beneficial way.

“The EC is seeking your support in the execution of its work in Kampala. We do not want to appear to be operating behind the back of the KCC authorities,” he said.

Ssebaana appealed to the EC to perform its duties independently and without fear or favour.

“You are a powerful institution because all of us pass through your hands. I don’t know how you conduct elections at a lower level. I am satisfied with the work of your institution,” he said.

Kiggundu said the EC prepared and submitted to the Government a sh1b budget for conducting by-elections throughout the country.

He asked KCC to encourage unregistered voters in the various parts of the city to register.
