THE Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has raised the examination fees for secondary schools in a bid to match the increasing costs of assessment.
The board secretary, Matthew Bukenya, said the rates had not been revised for long despite inflation and the depreciation of the shilling against the dollar.

He warned headteachers against imposing charges above the officials fees.
In a circular to secondary school headteachers, UNEB said it had raised the basic fees for O’ Level candidates from sh5,600 to sh7,500 and that for A’ Level to sh9,000.

O’ Level candidates will in addition pay sh4,850 per subject, up from sh3,700. Those at A’ Level have had their fees raised from sh5,600 to sh9,000 per principal subject and sh5,900 per subsidiary subject.
The private candidates will in addition pay an equivalent of basic fees in each category.
