ROGERS Ddungu is the first president of the East African Weightlifting Federation (EAWF) after he was elected at the first meeting in Tanzania on Saturday.

Ddungu, also Uganda Weightlifting Federation president, will be assisted by the three presidents of Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar.

Ddungu, now to guide the region for four years, said they are to ask the African and international federations for recognition and funding so that the regional championships become qualifying events for the world games.
Uganda is also vying to host the 2005 African meet.

The EAWF secretariat will be in Kampala and coordinated by Lanny Galikuwa Kimbowa.

Salim Musoke was also elected secretary and treasurer for EAWF when he represented the African Weightlifting president, Gamil Hanna to chair and over see the championships in Tanzania.

Kenyan Tom Muwombo was elected patron of the regional federation.

The meeting, held prior to the 2004 championships in Vijana Hall in Dar es Salaam, also voted Zanzibar as next host in absentia.

“We shall ask them to reply before the end of May. If they fail, then Kenya will host the EAWF next year,” secretary Salim Musoke said.

The EAWF would now have the challenge of attracting neighbouring countries like Sudan, DRC, Zambia and Malawi to join the federation according to Ddungu.

The EAWF media group has Mpoki Bukuku (chair), Bukedde’s Silvano Kibuuka and James Mayanja of WBS.
