THE most important pledge President Museveni made in his 2001 election manifesto was to step down in 2006, former presidential candidate Kibirige Mayanja has asserted.

Mayanja, the president of the Justice Forum, said in a statement yesterday that the Parliamentary Advocacy Forum (PAFO) was trying to help the President Museveni to implement his pledge.

Mayanja was responding to remarks made by the Minister of State for energy, Daudi Migereko, in an interview published by Sunday Vision, that he was trying to ensure “pledges in the President’s manifesto were implemented.”

“President Museveni, under his own signature said: ‘I am, therefore offering my self to serve the people of Uganda for the last presidential term in order to consolidate our gains in democratisation, putting in place a mechanism for orderly succession’,” said Mayanja, quoting from President Museveni’s 2001 election manifesto.

“In fact it was on the basis of this promise that some people may have voted for him. Migereko and his likes ought to be reminded that PAFO was going to deliberate on how to help the President implement his manifesto,” Mayanja said.
