The Government has increased the number of beneficiaries from the secondary education bursary scheme from two to four students per sub-county.
Speaking at a planning and budgeting workshop at the International Conference Centre on Wednesday, the commissioner for secondary education, Yusuf Nsubuga, said the measure aimed at accommodating the high number of Universal Primary Education (UPE) graduates.
“The issue of UPE graduates is everybody’s concern and we must see to it that there is continuity after primary level,”he said.
Since there are over 900 sub-counties, over 3,600 students will have free secondary education.
Participants said universal secondary education would not be possible in the next 10 years.
Liz Higgins, a reporesentative of the Education Funding Agencies Group, said the donors wanted every child to attain education at all levels by 2015.
Donors recommended the elimination of gender disparity in primary and secondary schools.
They also recommended tackling the HIV/AIDS pandemic and providing education to internally displaced children in war-torn areas.
