HOW often do you read a book for leisure? Reading storybooks during your leisure time is very good because it helps you to relax and learn a lot about places you may never visit.

Last Thursday morning, during the International Book Week celebrations at Kabira International School, Holland’s Deputy Ambassador to Uganda, Eric Hilberink, launched an exciting adventure storybook titled ‘Guavas and Oranges’ (inset).

Susan Kajura, the author of the famous Children’s Vision story series, ‘The Adventure of Tema’ and ‘Mulondo’s Children is the author of ‘Guavas and Oranges’.
Hilberink told parents and Kabira School pupils, who were dressed in costumes to look like their favourite authors that, “Susan’s stories are written to appeal to the young audience who can relate to her characters and their adventures.”

In the book, Susan takes us to the world of the Mulondo’s and how they relate with their tough neighbour, General Ogwang. He accuses the three Mulondo children of stealing guavas and oranges from his fruit garden.

Nalu, one of the Mulondo children, and her friend Okello, the General’s grandson, embark on a plot to discover who steals the fruits so that the Mulondo’s can redeem themselves from the General’s accusation.

The 48-page book is easy to read and makes you curious about who is stealing the fruits. Is it the class-dodger and stubborn Muko, one of the Mulondo children, or is it someone else?

Because many primary schools lack reading books, the pupils of Kabira raised money during the Book week. The money was used to buy copies of Guavas and Oranges to be donated to three local schools.

If your school does not get free copies of ‘Guavas and Oranges’, you can ask your parent or head teachers to buy them for you from Aristoc Book shop because they cost Shs2,000.
