THE Uganda Medical Association (UMA) and The Environmental Action Network (TEAN) on Thursday shunned a meeting convened by NEMA to discuss the implementation of the regulations banning smoking in public areas, protesting BAT (U) Ltd. participation.

UMA and TEAN are opposed to the BATU’s involvement in the discussions of public health measures to protect the lives of non-smokers.
“There should be a target and not a partner, in creating awareness and the fight against tobacco smoking. It is futile to discuss this matter with BATU when they still do not admit the dangers of passive smoking,” said Dr. Margaret Mungerera , chairperson.

TEAN, in a statement issued on Thursday said BATU does not agree that second hand smoke is dangerous nor does it believe that smoking in public places infringes the rights of non smokers, which are the two basic considerations underlying the regulations.
