EAC To Sink $600m In Victoria Basin

THE East African Community (EAC) has declared the Victoria basin an economic zone with a plan to sink in $600m (about sh1.2b), the permanent secretary in water, lands and environment ministry, Eng. Bezalel Kabanda has said.

THE East African Community (EAC) has declared the Victoria basin an economic zone with a plan to sink in $600m (about sh1.2b), the permanent secretary in water, lands and environment ministry, Eng. Bezalel Kabanda has said.
Kabanda said the basin had potential of bringing in about $400m to the region which could be doubled if economic activities were promoted.
During a national consultative workshop on capacity building at Grand Imperial Hotel in Kampala, the secretary said they planned to seed the lake to improve fishing, develop tourism and transport.
Kabanda said the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) had already committed $160m for the development of the Victoria basin.
and World Bank. SIDA “Other countries are getting maximum benefit from their water resources and we have to invest in our resources in order to create wealth,” he said.
The Victoria Basin involves Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda with its headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania. The aim is promoting international trade under the EAC. Ends
