KAMPALA City Council law enforcement officers recently fought with street vendors attempting to return to the streets of Kampala.

Over 100 vendors returned to the streets and began conducting their business at around 12:00pm on Wednesday.

When KCC security operatives were tipped about the situation, they stormed the city and arrested among others the chairman of Tukolabukozi Vendors Association, Sowedi Nkonge.

Central Division chairman Charles Musoke Sserunjogi said the vendors were following orders from Rubaga division resident district commissioner Fred Bamwine.

“The Rubaga Division RDC is using his office to disorganise business in the city. He is contradicting an agreement which banned street vending in 2002,” Sserunjogi said.

“This is abuse of office and lack of administrative responsibility. We shall not allow such leaders to disorganise KCC,” he said.

Sserunjogi said KCC would continue arresting the vendors if they returned to the streets.
